Todd Mark, vice president of education for Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater Dallas, advises not to be impulsive when it comes to getting a new credit card. “If you didn’t go out with the intention of ‘I’m looking to open a credit card today,’ don’t impulsively do that,” he says. Often times we get offered the store credit card at the cash register of big stores, and many shoppers are tempted to get them on the spot in order to score a one time discount on their purchase. The wise thing to do is to look closely at the long term benefits of that card and to compare it to your current credit cards.
